James Franklin Cowan

OBITUARY James “Jack” Franklin Russell Cowan, Sr. age 62 departed this life on April 22, 2017. He was born on February 27, 1955 to the late Howard Wesley Cowan, Sr. and the late Monica “Greer” Cowan. He leaves to cherish his memories three children: Angel Nevah Cowan, James Franklin Russell Cowan, Jr. and Howard Jason Demetrius Cowan; two stepchildren: Vanessa (Bobby) Robertson and Bernard Johnson; he was very proud of his children and grandchildren; and his ex-wife and special friend Anna Denise Cowan, all of Lexington. He also leaves to cherish his memories four brothers: Howard Wesley (Cora) Cowan, Jr., Melvin Earl Cowan, Perry Quincy Cowan and Lonnie Cowan; three sisters: Ada Lorraine German, Bonnie Jean Blair and Monica Lee Johnson, all of Lexington, and a host of special relatives and friends. James attended Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church from his youth and was baptized at Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a firm believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. James had many talents he made an altar in Industrial Arts Class in Junior High School. This is where his mother would teach her children about the word of God. He created the original Winburn Junior High School Warrior Emblem in the ninth grade. James also created the logo for the Chronic Pain Support Group, Inc. and the original baptism mural for the Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor R.C. Hutchison. He studied art at Campbellsville College and the University of Kentucky. He inspired and shared his love of art with his family. Helping some to receive Art scholarships. His teachings of the famous 1, 2, 3 man helped some get their start and excel in drawing and painting. His passion led to writing and illustrating novels, children’s books, comic books and numerous paintings and drawings. His final dream was granted by The Dream Foundation when they published his novel 1800 Century. James held several positions before he became disabled. He was employed at Lots Sandwich Shop, Mr. Softie and Gracie Maid Ice Cream Truck, Southwestern Tobacco Company were they nicknamed him “Tow Motor Jack” (he drove the Forklift) and worked as a counselor with his brother Melvin at the Juvenile Detention Center on Cisco Road. James was also very proud of his 1955 Ford when he was younger. He said it was cherry in mint condition which meant like new. He also liked western pictures. he really enjoyed all of the Elvis Presley movies and songs. He had an electric guitar and taught himself to play and sing Elvis Presley songs. The family gratefully acknowledges the many acts of kindness shown during our time of bereavement. Thank you for all of your prayers and thoughtfulness.
