Joyce Lynn Smith

On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, the Lord called His servant, Joyce Lynn Smith home to eternal rest at the age of 65 . She was born on June 29, 1959, in Lexington, Kentucky, to the late Virginia “Tootie” Watkins and Irvin W . Smith . “Joycie,” as the family called her, graduated from Bryan Station Senior High School . Joyce was active in the marching band, where she played the clarinet, and she truly loved it . She loved to dance and sing . Joyce shared her life with a special group of friends from the Class of ‘77, who called themselves the “Brunch Bunch,” which included Shelia Coles, Veronica Williams and Gina Scearce, whom she loved dearly . Joyce was employed at the Communication Department at the University of Kentucky where she retired after 25 years of service . In 2001, Joyce confessed Christ as her personal Lord and Savior and was baptized with water and the Holy Ghost at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, where she served faithfully for 13 years . She later became a member of East Second Street Christian Church . Joyce loved to sing with the choir, make corsages for Women’s Day, make purses, specialty breads and fruited drinks . She often served as a part of the financial team at ESSCC . She was the party planner and game show host at most of our family functions and truly enjoy loving on her family . Joycie was a quiet, spirited lady but would stand up for what she believed in and was protective of her family . She was loved by all those that met and knew her . Joyce was preceded in death by her mother, Virgina Watkins; father, Irvin Smith, step- father, John Watkins, Sr .; and sister, Rossalyn “Rozie” Smith . She leaves to cherish her memory, her two children, Marquis (Champayne) Smith and Ronnee Smith; six grandchildren, Malik Ross, Jr ., Amirion Ross, Elijah Smith, Zion Smith, Jocelyn Smith and Caiden Knowles; five sisters, Vivian Fields, Charmaine Simpson, Gloria (Derrick) Williams, Gloria (John) Croley and Fern Clay; three brothers, Irvin Smith, John Watkins, Jr . and Demetrius Mullins; an aunt, Bessie Newsome; an uncle, Harvey Cloyd; and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends
