Brenda Holmes

Brenda Holmes was born November 30, 1954, to the late Stanley and Sallie Smith. She passed away on April 4, 2026. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Edward Holmes, and two sisters, Doris White (George) and Beverly Clayborne, and children, Margot Smith and Ryan Holmes (Georgina), and one aunt, Virginia Smith. She is also survived by her grandchildren: She became a devoted member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized. Throughout her years of membership, she remained actively involved, participating in Sunday School, Children’s Fellowship, and the Children’s Usher Board. She received her education in Lexington, Kentucky, attending Constitution Elementary School, Lexington Junior Middle School, and Tates Creek High School, where she proudly performed in the marching band. After graduating from high school, she pursued higher education at Eastern Kentucky University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. She later continued her studies at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky, where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Education. She devoted 29 years to teaching elementary school, beginning her career at Arlington Elementary before transferring a few years later to Booker T. Washington. After many rewarding years there, she continued her journey at SCAPA at Bluegrass, where she completed her teaching career. Even in retirement, her passion for nurturing young minds never faded; she taught Vacation Bible School and volunteered with the Read to Succeed and BMW programs. During this season of life, she also cultivated a deep love for photography and poetry, through which her faith and walk with God grew ever stronger. She found great joy in sharing her poetry with others, hoping her words would bless them as she felt blessed. Above all, she treasured time with her family—especially her grandchildren—and held close every moment, big or small, that they shared together. Her impact on others stretches far and wide and will continue to be felt for years to come. She will be missed by so many who knew her. Her love was patient, her love was kind, her faith was unwavering and because of that we are better for having known her, forever touched by the grace and strength she shared so freely. Jordynn Smith, Jalynn Smith, Vivian Holmes, and Olivia Holmes and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and brother- and sister-in laws. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Betty Dowd.
