Mozena Wofford Gainer

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, Sister Mozena Wofford Gainer peacefully passed away at Cedarhurst Senior Living (formerly Preston Greens) in Lexington, Kentucky, surrounded by the love of her family. After a life marked by steadfast faith, devotion to her family, and faithful service to others, she entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior. Mozena was born on August 13, 1938, in Widener, Arkansas, to the late Wrethard and Emma Wofford. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. John Baptist Church. Her faith remained the foundation of her life, guiding her through every season. In 1945, her family relocated to Gary, Indiana, where she attended Gary Community Schools and graduated from Emerson High School in 1955. After graduation, she worked in a sewing factory and later at U.S. Steel, earning several work-based certifications through her dedication and strong work ethic. In 1964, she married Tutwiler Taylor, and together they welcomed their son, Terrell. In 1970, she moved to Seattle, Washington, where she worked for Seattle Community College and later Tacoma Community College. On August 12, 1975, she married Ezell Gainer. As the wife of a United States Army soldier, she embraced military life with grace, supporting her family through assignments across the United States and overseas. While stationed in Germany, she began working as a civilian employee for the United States Government, serving in various administrative roles for more than thirty-one years before retiring in 2008. Following retirement, Mozena and Ezell made their home in Lexington, Kentucky. They became active members of Main Street Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess and faithfully attended worship, Sunday School, Bible study, and church fellowship. Wherever life took her, she believed it was important for her family to have a church home and to remain rooted in their faith. Those who knew Mozena will remember her gentle spirit, quiet strength, and unwavering love for her family. She was kind, dependable, and deeply devoted to the Lord. Whether caring for those she loved or simply sharing God’s goodness, she lived her faith with humility and consistency. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wrethard and Emma Wofford; her brother, Samuel B. Wofford; and four siblings who passed away in infancy. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of more than 50 years, Ezell Gainer of Lexington, Kentucky; her son and daughter-in-love, Terrell and Dr. Marnita Taylor of Merrillville, Indiana; her grandson, Brandon (Sheretta) Taylor of Danville, Indiana; her granddaughter, Marissa (Adam) Bandimere of Chicago, Illinois; her beloved great-grandchildren, Stephen, Symone, and Sion Taylor of Danville, Indiana; her sisters, Evelyn Louise Wofford of Gary, Indiana, and Cassandra Adrienne Herriford of Merrillville, Indiana; her brothers-in-law, James D. (Jerrieta) Gainer, Brad B. (Octasia Nikkole) Gainer, Howard (Perdeeta) Gainer; her sisters-in-law, Arether (Obbie) Tompkin, Constance (Jeremiah) Alexander, Gail Forehand, Mary (Robert) Crawford, and Rhonda Gainer; as well as her nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, military family, Main Street Baptist Church Family, staff and residents at Cedarhurst Senior Living, staff at Bluegrass Care Navigators Hospice, and countless others whose lives were blessed by knowing her. While we grieve her passing, we also give God thanks for a life faithfully lived. We rejoice in the hope we have in Christ and the promise that, because of Him, this is not the end of her story.
