Norman B. Smith

In the state of Kentucky, in the county of Boyle, in the city of Danville (via Atlanta, Ga), a blessing was bestowed upon John and Evelyn Smith, third generation morticians. One Norman Smith was sent to grace their lives. Life was ever changed, as when a soul enters into its realm. Norman B. Smith was to leave a mighty footprint upon life’s tapestry. Norman received his early education from Danville Elementary and Bates High School, both in his beloved Bluegrass State. Later he journeyed to Atlanta, Georgia where he attended Morehouse College. It was there that he met his beloved Marshall Ann, “Marsha.” They had walked together for nearly six decades. This union begot strong and devoted sons, and these are the sons of Norman and Marshall: Norman B. Smith, Jr., Keith B. Smith and John Marshall Smith (deceased) - life’s greatest gifts. God further favored their uniting with three gorgeous, accomplished granddaughters: Arielle Cymone Smith, Emma Coco Smith and Lauren Nicole Smith (Norman Smith, Jr.) Thus, they beamed with pride. Norman found a way to relate to all men. He loved; therefore, he was loved. He valued his extended family: he sought to assist and protect all in his keeping - often admonishing with love as he dispersed wisdom. His nephews, nieces, cousins, his sisters-in law, as well as his adopted family and friends were ever dear to his heart. Drafted patriarch of the family, he took his role seriously. He was never too busy to listen and seek a solution to ones’ problems. Norman was a member of Shaw Temple A.M.E. Zion Church. Next to his family, Normans’ occupation was his passion. For nearly five decades he worked in the entertainment industry, and the journey continued. His beloved Kasper was birthed early on. As with all his endeavors, the building of his acclaimed Kasper Entertainment Inc. became a success in every sense. Known as ‘the honest promoter,’ Norman looked upon all clients and performers as family; he desired the best outcome for all. Ever eager to assist others along the way, one had only to express a need. Many accolades came to Norman over the years, the recognition of a job well done; he was noted as President and CEO of Kasper Entertainment and for his work in the Atlanta area, as well as cities throughout the nation and abroad. Norman was presented a proclamation from the City of Atlanta during a celebration given in his honor. This event was hosted by Councilman C.T. Martin and now Councilwoman Andrea Boone. During this festive occasion, Norman also received the prestigious Phoenix award from Mayor Kasim Reed. His promotional influence has been felt on many stages and venues: The Omni, Civic Center, the Fox, Lakewood Amphitheater, Chastain Park and others. Norman was the first to bring the acclaimed Shelley Garrett’s ‘Beauty Shop’ as well as Tyler Perry’s hit stage plays. Kasper Entertainment, Norman promoted major artist tours and concerts such as: Parliament Funkadelic, Earth Wind and Fire, Rick James, Prince, The Jacksons Five, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Teena Marie, Switch, Brick, Barkays, SOS Band, Cameo, Lakeside, Con Funk Shun, Keith Sweat, Patti LaBelle, The Time, Zapp / Roger, BB King, the Isley Brothers and many, many more. Norman forever maintained a business relationship with many Atlanta radio stations including: Kiss 104.1, V103 and WAOK as well as such radio legends such as Tom Joyner, Young Blood and many more radio affiliates throughout the city and the nation. He will surely be appreciated for one of his best-known enterprises, The Flashback Festival. This proved to be a gift of love for him and partner Preston Elliott for over three decades. Norman, who had been ill for sometime, was never one to quit. He fought hard and he fought long. On the fifth day of August in this year of our Lord, Norman relinquished the implements of battle. Alas, he has won the War!
